St Peter's Church at Barton-upon-Humber (TA 0347 2194) was declared redundant in 1972 and taken into public guardianship in 1978 by the then Department of Environment. Given that it had long been recognised that it had a late Saxon origin, a major programme of excavation and survey was instituted. This explored the church and its churchyard, and ran from 1978 to 1984 under the direction of Warwick Rodwell. The programme has meant that this is the most intensively studied and recorded parish church in the country. It also produced the largest collection of human remains ever excavated in the UK. The latter provide a unique insight into the population of a small, relatively isolated, market town over 900 years.

The study provides a basis for a future strategy to improve and widen public dissemination of the results of such investigations, including the deposition of data into a publicly accessible research archive.

The dataset comprises detailed records (in the form of databases) of stratigraphic data generated by the excavations, and the substantial parts of the material archive, including the medieval and later vessel glass, the medieval and later pottery, the medieval and later metalwork (copper alloy, iron, and lead objects), the bone and ivory objects, the wooden and leather objects of medieval and later date. Other elements of the material archive, for instance the medieval floor tiles and the medieval stonework, are described in full in the 2008 publication. The dataset also includes a detailed catalogue of the skeletal evidence, complementing the more discursive account given in the publication.

This desk-based assessment of aggregate-producing areas in the East Riding of Yorkshire was carried out by Humber Field Archaeology, with funding from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, through arrangement with English Heritage.

Five Study Areas were selected, totalling 274km2 in area, targeting areas in Holderness and the Vale of York which contain (or have in the past contained) economically-exploitable aggregates within the present-day county of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Three of the Study Areas encompassed Areas of Search defined in the Joint Minerals Local Plan, where there is a reasonable expectation of minerals being present in viable quantities, and where it is expected that any new proposals for aggregate extraction would be made in the medium to longer term. Areas outside of this were also included, comprising sites where existing permissions will allow future exploitation, where exploitation in areas just outside of the preferred search zones is likely, or where economic exploitation has been undertaken relatively recently (since the mid-20th century).

Aerial photography in 1957 resulted in the discovery of a rectangular double-ditched enclosure near Bewdley. Excavation in the 1970s, in advance of gravel extraction, provided limited evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age activity prior to occupation in the later Iron Age, when the enclosure was established. Pottery and briquetage indicate trading links with the wider region, respectively with west and north Worcestershire, and with Droitwich. The main Iron Age occupation is dated from the later 2nd century to second half of the 1st century BC. By the 3rd-4th centuries AD the site was apparently cultivated, as small quantities of Romano-British pottery were scattered across the site, probably as a result of manuring arable fields associated with a nearby, but as yet unlocated settlement. Similarly in the medieval and post-medieval periods a thin scatter of finds in the overlying soils indicated further agricultural activity. Analysis and reporting on the 1970s archive has enabled the potential of this site to be realised, so that it can now contribute to ongoing research into Iron Age sites in the region, especially in relation to those situated in an aggregates landscape. In addition to updating the original structural and environmental evidence the report includes new finds reporting and a fresh overall discussion, which draw attention to the significance of the earlier prehistoric activity and to the distribution pattern of the Iron Age finds on the site.

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to carry out archaeological field work on land at The Deanery, Chapel Road, Southampton (NGR 442700 111550). The Site is located within the known extent of the nationally important Mid-Saxon settlement of Hamwic. Excavation was undertaken between August and October 2008 on an east to west aligned rectangle of 63m by 29m (1786m2) situated c. 10m to the south of the present Chapel Road. The latter is regarded as being of Saxon origin linking St Mary's church with the water front on the River Itchen. A watching brief was maintained during excavations for foundations across the rest of the site between July and December 2008. The archaeological features exposed comprised pits, wells, ditches, gullies, a possible hearth and postholes. Pits were the most numerous features (112 of the 166 features). The only discernible buildings recognised in the excavation area comprised a small, irregular possible structure, formed by four postholes and a gully of Saxon date and a short length of late medieval or early post-medieval wall footing recorded in an earlier evaluation trench, immediately to the west of the area excavation. The excavation has confirmed the continuity of activity associated with Mid-Saxon Hamwic (7th - 9th centuries AD) which has been recorded in this part of modern Southampton and within earlier evaluations and excavations on the Site.

The fieldwork comprised of an archaeological excavation of the footprint of the proposed building. A total of four archaeological features were identified within the Site. These comprised two ditches and two inter-cutting pits. Two Saxon rubbish pits contained material associated with the disposal of both general domestic waste and cess material, and possibly industrial waste; the latter suggested by moderate quantities of slag retrieved from the fills of the pits. Although no dating evidence has been recovered, it is likely that the two ditches identified as lying perpendicular to the extant street frontage, represent post-medieval property boundaries.

The site lies within the south-west of the known extent of the nationally important mid-Saxon settlement of Hamwic. The natural Brickearth sub-strata was cut by a number of pit like features; only two of these were sample excavated and very little dating evidence was recovered. However, both sample excavated features displayed a degree of regularity that suggested that they were shallow pits and were very similar in form to the Mid Saxon pits excavated during earlier work on the Site. These features were sealed below a subsoil layer of dark yellowish brown silty sand loam with common gravel and sparse charcoal inclusions. This subsoil may have been formed by arable cultivation following the depopulation of Hamwic, when the area reverted primarily to agriculture. In the north-west of the site the subsoil was cut by two wall footings, of probable postmedieval date that may represent the remains of a building depicted on a late 18th century map, or possibly some sort of wall, vaguely depicted on a map of c. 1600. In all three trenches, the subsoil was overlain by a mid-dark greyish brown silty loam with common gravel and charcoal and sparse brick fragment inclusions, thought to represent a possible post-medieval buried soil. This was in turn cut by probable 19th century building remains and probably associated features in the north of the site that were sealed below the modern overburden.

The overall aim of this project is to compare the wreck data maintained by the National Monuments Record (NMR) and United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) datasets and, where applicable, suggest solutions as to how any discrepancies should be overcome. This project supports the work undertaken by the NMR in relation to finds reported through the EH-British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) Protocol for Reporting Finds of Archaeological Interest. Importantly, it will enable better informed licensing processes and facilitate a greater understanding of the data required to support UK Government priorities such as marine spatial planning.

This project is a survey of the archaeology of the Isle of Wight focussing on areas which produce aggregate. It is funded by the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) administered by English Heritage (EH) Historic Environment Enabling Programme (HEEP). Similar projects have been carried out in other counties across England, including Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, East Sussex, Bath and North East Somerset and West Berkshire.
The primary aims of the project were to improve knowledge of the archaeological resource of the aggregate producing areas of the Isle of Wight and to facilitate more informed advice concerning the impacts and mitigation of present and future aggregates extraction on the Island.

This project produced a resource assessment and research agenda for England's maritime and marine historic environment, which is the first, key stage in developing a full research framework. The research framework will provide a coherent overview of previous research into England's maritime, marine and coastal archaeology, which will enable long-term strategic planning, inform policy and provide a statement of agreed research priorities within which researchers can shape and seek funding for projects.

This is a collaborative project undertaken between two local authority archaeology services, those of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire County Councils, and two universities, those at Birmingham and Southampton. The projects primary aim is to improve methodological approaches and baseline information underpinning strategic planning, individual application decisions and evaluation and mitigation strategies relating to mineral extraction in the Lower Severn Valley. The project area has been designed to encompass both the active, and anticipated increasing, large-scale extraction of aggregates along a 50km stretch of the Lower Severn Valley, from Stourport to below Gloucester.

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Midsummer Homes Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of development on land at Headlands, Downton, Wiltshire, centred on NGR 417113, 121285. The field evaluation was undertaken prior to the submission of a planning application to Wiltshire Council for the construction of 14 houses on the site. The evaluation comprised the excavation of two 10m x 1.5m trenches positioned over the footprint of the proposed buildings. No archaeological features or deposits were recorded within the trenches and the results have confirmed that the western half of the proposed development area contains very little potential for archaeological remains to be present.

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Salisbury City Council to undertake a Watching Brief during enhancement works at Hudson's Field, Salisbury. These works include refurbishment of the entrance road to the public car park, creation of a new access road and creation of new parking spaces. The Site is located 2km north of Salisbury on the A345 road to Amesbury, 750m south of the multi-period hillfort of Old Sarum. The Site is currently under use as recreational playing fields. A study of the archaeological background of the Site indicated the proposed development lies within an area of archaeological significance. However, a recent geophysical survey did not identify any anomalies which of archaeological significance within the survey area. All construction activities which had the potential to expose archaeological remains were subject to monitoring. The ground works were carried out using a 360 degrees tracked mechanical excavator equipped with a flat ditching bucket in order to maximise archaeological visibility. Where archaeological deposits were encountered, excavation was undertaken by hand. Nine features were revealed and excavated. One pit was recorded at the north-eastern end of the access road and a further pit and postholes were recorded at the south-western extremity of the car park. The north eastern pit contained large amounts of burnt flint, the other to the south west contained struck flint and two sherds of late prehistoric pottery. One of the three postholes contained struck flint. Four further possible postholes/pits were excavated and recorded but were interpreted as root hollows or geological features. The work confirmed the findings of the geophysical survey that the Site lies on the periphery of the postulated extents of the Roman town of Old Sarum.

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Morgan Sindall to undertake an archaeological watching brief during ground works on land at Timsbury Lake, Romsey, Hampshire, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 435660 124150. The proposed works included the widening of an existing access road, stripping of land for the construction of lake-side structures, removal of bunds and the cutting of a new section of canal within the existing lake system. The watching brief was undertaken in the period of early September to late October 2010 and was carried out during the construction of the new access road, new buildings area and the cutting of the new canal section. No significant archaeological features, deposits or finds were recovered during the course of the fieldwork. The initial stripping identified the natural clay at a relatively shallow depth and all areas had been considerably disturbed by the existing vegetation and previous modern activity within the Site.

Cambridgeshire has been subject to widespread gravel (aggregates) extraction throughout the 20th century and, like much of the rest of the country, intensively since World War 2. The county is crossed by three great river valleys - the Cam, the Great Ouse and the Nene - that produced large swathes of river gravels thus creating the local resource for extraction.
A considerable amount of archaeological records have been generated by this extraction activity and collectively these records provide details of human habitation and impact on the Cambridgeshire landscape from the Palaeolithic through, unbroken and often in great detail, to the modern day. An investigation of this material affords an opportunity to chronicle the landscape history of great swathes of Cambridgeshire and to contribute to both the archaeological and palaeontological records.
A study by Oxford Archaeology East has been carried out as part of an Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) commission to identify and assess the full spectrum of archaeological records and interventions on the Cambridgeshire Gravels, and subsequently to identify the degree to which backlogs of analysis and publications exist.

The Yorkshire Wolds chalkland is a well-studied archaeological landscape which is of particular significance for the prehistoric to medieval periods. The approaches taken to the archaeology of this area have mainly focussed on site-based, period-based archaeological investigations or on post-processual landscape archaeology but there has been little geoarchaeological research undertaken. Drawing on the substantial body of dry valley research from the southern English chalk this thesis characterises the nature of dry valley colluvial deposits in several locations on the High Wolds and relates them to geomorphic and human modification processes. The deep deposits on the Wolds top, which have always been assumed, may not be as widespread as once thought and the variability of deposits within short valley reaches is high. Different modes of erosion and deposition can be seen and are related to the steepness of slope, the deposit nature on interfluve slopes and land use practices. The lack of dateable material found within the colluvium has limited the opportunity for dating phases of increased erosion and accretion. A lack of preservation of land snails, which are one of the key palaeoenvironmental indicators in calcareous landscapes, may be linked to an increase in acid rain during the last few decades. A review of the past evidence for the palaeoenvironment and land use on the Yorkshire Wolds has found that this data is limited and can not be relied upon.

This post-excavation project undertaken by Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service was commissioned by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund to bring to publication the results of 10 years of work at Wellington Quarry in Herefordshire. Between 1986 and 1996, a small team working in advance of sand and gravel extraction recorded significant archaeological deposits scattered across an area of more than 37 hectares of farmland. Although the quarry company, Redland Aggregates (now Lafarge Aggregates), voluntarily supported the costs of the fieldwork and some preliminary reporting, it has only been through ALSF support that it has been possible to bring this work to publication. During these 10 years a regionally unique archaeological and palaeoenvironmental sequence was recorded covering nearly 8000 years of interrelated human activity and landscape change in the Lower Lugg Valley. Starting with use by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, the heavily wooded floodplain witnessed periods of sporadic occupation and activity throughout early prehistory. A mid 4th millennium BC pit group provided a detailed insight into a wide range of seasonally based activities, while later funerary deposits included a wealthy Beaker burial. From the start of the 2nd millennium BC, an increasingly open and cleared landscape existed beyond the floodplain, on which activity was evidenced by occasional finds from former watercourses. Ritual deposition of human remains and artefacts in the later prehistoric period included a rare Iron Age double inhumation, though by this time a more settled and farmed landscape had emerged. By the 2nd century AD, a streamside settlement had been established. Expansion and intensification of this settlement led to the construction, by the 4th century, of one or more well-appointed stone buildings indicating that at least some of the inhabitants lived a highly Romanised lifestyle, rare on rural sites in this region. The settlement was abandoned by the late 4th to early 5th century but, until at least the 12th to 14th centuries, arable cultivation continued. During the post-medieval period there was a shift towards an enclosed landscape of pasture and meadow, a pattern maintained until the onset of mineral extraction in the 1980s.

The project was undertaken by MOLA and London Borough of Havering, with funding from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund administered by English Heritage with the aim of improving knowledge of the archaeological resource in aggregate producing areas of the within the Greater London Borough of Havering. The primary aim of the project was to improve knowledge of the archaeological resource of the aggregate producing areas of Havering in order to provide the appropriate tools to facilitate strategic planning decisions, and the management and preservation of archaeological sites and historic landscapes within those areas.
The project was primarily a GIS-based data analysis of available archaeological data; it identified, characterised and digitally mapped, available information on Havering's archaeological resource in areas of past, present and potential future aggregates extraction. This was intended to enhance existing baseline data, to improve archaeological mitigation of future extraction proposals in the borough, and to increase public, industry and other stakeholders' awareness of the archaeology and historic landscapes within the aggregates areas.

The May 2011 outbreak of an <em>E. coli</em> infection in Europe resulted in serious concerns about the potential appearance of a new deadly strain of bacteria, <em>Escherichia coli</em> O104:H4 TY-2482. In response to this situation, and immediately after the reports of deaths, the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf and BGI-Shenzhen worked together to sequence the bacterium and assess its human health risk.<br /><br />The bacteriums genome was first sequenced using Life Technologies; Ion Torrent sequencing platform. According to the results of the draft assembly, the estimated genome size of this new <em>E. coli</em> strain is about 5.2 Mb. Sequence analysis indicated this bacterium is an EHEC serotype O104 <em>E. coli</em> strain. Comparative analysis showed that this bacterium has 93% sequence similarity with the EAEC 55989 <em>E. coli</em> strain, which was isolated in the Central African Republic and known to cause serious diarrhea. This strain of <em>E. coli</em>, however, has also acquired specific sequences that appear to be similar to those involved in the pathogenicity of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. The acquisition of these genes may have occurred through horizontal gene transfer.<br /><br />To maximize its utility to the research community and aid those fighting the epidemic, this genomic data was released into the public domain under a <a href="http://creativecommons.org/about/cc0">CC0 license</a>.<br /><br />To the extent possible under law, <a href ="http://www.genomics.cn/">BGI Shenzhen</a> has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to genomic data from the 2011 <em>E. coli</em> outbreak. This work is published from China.

North Sea Palaeolandscapes Project (2005 - 2006) sought to utilise existing 3D seismic data to generate information on the Mesolithic Landscape of the North Sea. The North Sea Palaeolandscapes Project utilised a variety of geophysical data sources, in conjunction with more traditional map data to record the Mesolithic landscape of this region. The primary data set (not included in this archive) consisted of the 3D seismic 'Mega-Survey' as compiled by PGS (www.PGS.com) and kindly provided to Birmingham University to assist this research.
The project covered approximately 23,000km2 of the Southern North Sea, from the Norfolk coast to the Doggerbank, and represented what is probably one of the largest continuous areas of geophysical data ever used for archaeology. He work concentrated on mapping the upper land-surfaces of the region which related to the Early Mesolithic of Doggerland. 13 distinct landscape zones were observed during the course of this research. These range from marine estuaries and salt marshes, through regions dominated by freshwater river systems and wetlands, to coastal plains and areas of rolling hills.
The project has created a variety of resources in addition to the interpretive dataset archive lodged with the ADS. These include two volumes which discuss the results in more detail which have been published by Archaeopress (2007) and in a more popular style by the CBA (2009).

The West Coast Palaeolandscapes Project builds upon the results of comparative work carried out within the Southern North Sea as part of the North Sea Palaeolandscape Project (NSPP). The results of that project, and the associated data audit variation, suggested that several other areas existed within the UK where sufficient data could support similar work. The west coast of Britain was identified as one area where any information derived on existing palaeolandscapes would have a significant impact on our understanding of the Mesolithic and, potentially, the Palaeolithic in England and Wales, whilst also informing the archaeological records of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.

This project set out to ascertain how material evidence for military action and the landscape in which it took place can be better integrated into the investigation and management of the UK's historic environment. The project was planned in two stages. Phase One, upon which this volume reports, was designed as a resource assessment focussing primarily upon battles, involving the preparation of a gazetteer, an assessment of condition and potential with more detailed field examination of a number of representative examples, leading to a report that would include a design for Phase Two. The design of Phase One built on substantial experience already gained in Scotland; its outputs are offered to inform policy and assist management of land use change, the work of HERs, planners, and the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The main aim of the study was to characterise the medieval pottery industry of the Sible Hedingham area and its output so that its products can be more readily identified at consumer sites, and to increase our knowledge of medieval pottery in Essex and East Anglia. The aim was also to place the industry in its geographical setting both in terms of the siting of the kilns and in the distribution and marketing of its products. It was also felt important to examine the origins and affinities of this ware and shed light on its demise.

Project: CLM regional climate model runs forced by the global IPCC scenario runs - These regional climate simulations have been funded by the BMBF and computed at DKRZ by the group "Model and Data" of MPI-M, Hamburg, in close cooperation with BTU Cottbus, HZG Geesthacht and PIK Potsdam. Serving as community model, the climate version of the local model (CLM) of the DWD was used to simulate the regional climate of the 20th century (1960-2000) and 21st century (2001-2100) in Europe. The regional model runs are forced by the global IPCC scenario runs ( A1B and B1 ,http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc/emission/index.htm ) with different assumptions regarding the development of global greenhouse gas concentrations to explore future developments in the European climate on a regional scale.

CLM (see http://www.clm-community.eu/index.php?menuid=198 ) was run in non hydrostatic mode with 0.165 degree horizontal grid resolution and was forced 6 hourly by the output of the global climate model runs with ECHAM5/MPIOM. The climate of the 20th century was simulated by three 20th century realization runs, set off at different initialization times.
For storage in and download from this data base, the data has been transformed into time series of single model variables and is provided in two data streams (referenced as "data stream 2" and "data stream 3"). Data stream 2 is given on a rotated grid with 0.165 deg. spatial resolution. Data stream 3 is projected onto a non-rotated grid with 0.2 deg. spatial resolution (usual geographical coordinates). For the data transformation between the respective grids the cdo-routines have been used.
For further information regarding the original model output (referenced as "data stream 0" and "data stream 1") please contact model(at)dkrz.de.
See http://sga.wdc-climate.de for more details on CLM simulations in the context of the BMBF funding priority "klimazwei", some useful information on handling climate model data and the data access regulations.
Summary: The experiment CLM_C20_3_D3 contains European regional climate simulations of the years 1960-2000 on a regular geographical grid. The data are generated during post processing of the corresponding data stream 2 experiment (CLM_C20_3_D2) of regional climate model runs (CLM non hydrostatic, see http://www.clm-community.eu ). The simulations of the 20th century (1960-2000) have been forced by the third (_3_) run of the global 20th century climate (EH5-T63L31_OM-GR1.5L40_20C_3_6H) with observed anthropogenic forcing.
In data stream 3 (_D3) the output variables of CLM data stream 2 and some additionally derived parameters are stored as time series on a regular grid with a horizontal spacing of 0.2 degree. The model parameters have been transformed onto the regular geographical grid by the CDO routines. Please note, that none of the variables has been corrected for topographical differences between the two grids. The model domain of data stream 3 covers the European region starting at 34.6/-10.6 (lat/lon, centre of lower left grid box) with an increment of 0.2 degree. The number of grid points is 177/238 (lat/lon).
For some model variables and additionally derived parameters some statistics on daily, monthly or yearly basis are available. See also http://sga.wdc-climate.de for a list of available parameters.
Please contact sga"at"dkrz.de for data request details.
See http://sga.wdc-climate.de for more details on CLM simulations in the context of the BMBF funding priority "klimazwei", some useful information on handling climate model data and the data access regulations.
The output format is netCDF

The Waite Project constitutes a record of potentially-Palaeolithic lithic surface finds from the Nuneaon area retrieved in fieldwalking by Mr Ron Waite of Nuneaton over many decades, and kept in his own private collection between 2005 and 2008. These finds have been important in emphasising the surprising density of the Palaeolithic occupation of this region, and the extensive and continuing use of quartzite raw material to supplement the often limited and poor quality flint, first transported into the area by the Anglian ice in MIS 12. The Project material probably postdates this glaciation and may predate MIS 6, when Britain seems to have been unoccupied until MIS 3, when Neanderthal people returning to the region continued to use quartzite for their tools. Mr Waite's private collection comprised over 400 items, which he made available to Anne Graf, the creator of the dataset, for study and recording between 2005 and 2008. This dataset catalogues the collection as of that period, predominantly of quartzite raw material, with some flint and a few andesitic pieces.

This project presents the results of the emergency recording and undesignated site assessment of the possible wreck of the barque Antoinette, Camel Estuary, Padstow, Cornwall carried out by Historic Environment, Cornwall Council and maritime archaeologist Kevin Camidge for English Heritage in 2010. The wreck had been exposed early in 2010 by shifting sands upon Town Bar at the entrance to the Camel Estuary, which is sited close to a navigational channel (NGR centred at SW 92650 75380). The Padstow Harbour Master proposed to remove the wreck as a hazard to shipping in the week commencing 1 March 2010; given the size of the remains, the use of explosives was proposed, along with the possibility of dismantling the wreck with a dredger-mounted crane and barge. Emergency recording of the wreck was therefore carried out on 28 February and a watching brief undertaken during demolition when some of the vessel's timbers were recovered and recorded.

This project explored the cultural and biological experience of immigrant communities in Roman Britain. It has long been known from epigraphic and historical sources that Britain was home to a wide range of immigrants during the Roman period, with most of the evidence referring to imperial officials and military personnel. Using a range of scientific techniques, we have identified possible migrants in the burial record of Roman Britain.

The Tales of the Frontier research project explored of the significance of the Wall and its landscape as both monument and icon from the time of Bede (C8) to today. What role has it played in ideas about the origins of 'civilization' and the identities of self (English, British) and others (Scots, colonial subjects, etc)? How has its monumentality shaped the work of scholars and the experiences of locals and visitors? Why, and how, do people come to visit the Wall and what do they do when get there? In fact, where and what exactly is Hadrian's Wall?

The ACE network aims to promote contemporary archaeology at a European wide level, by emphasising its cultural, scientific, and economic dimensions, including its manifold interest for the wider public. With the acceleration of infrastructure and development works throughout the continent in the past decades, contemporary archaeology has become particularly important and challenging. The process of development poses severe threats to archaeological remains, which are by nature fragile and non-renewable, but it can also provide new opportunities for increasing our knowledge about the past and for enhancing sustainable archaeological heritage management for the benefit of all European citizens.

The village of Welton-le-Wold is located approximately 6 km west of Louth in the district of East Lindsey, Lincolnshire. The sands and gravels that fill the valley were deposited during the Pleistocene and are buried beneath glacial tills (between 4m and 13m thick), and were extensively quarried from the late 19th century until the mid 1970's.
Between 1969 and 1972, Professor Alan Straw and the then schoolboy, Christopher Alabaster collected three hand axes, a retouched flake and the fossilised remains of elephant, red deer, probable Irish giant deer and horse. They came from a 1.5m to 2m vertical zone which was 3.25m to 4.25m below the base of the glacial till in upper Welton gravels, across approximately 30m of the active western quarry face in Welton-le-Wold. It was, (and still is), so rare for Palaeolithic artefacts to be found unequivocally stratified beneath glacial till that publication of the assemblage and its Pleistocene context, swiftly followed; in 1976 by Alabaster and Straw in Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society and then in 1977 by Wymer and Straw in Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society . The completeness of the glacial sequence, and the potential of the site to resolve critical questions of chronology in regional Pleistocene studies make Welton-le-Wold one of the most important quaternary geological sites in the East Midlands.

The Chinese rhesus macaque (<em>Macaca mulatta lasiota</em>) is a subspecies of rhesus macaques that mainly resides in western and central China. Due to their anatomical and physiological similarity with human beings, macaques are a common laboratory model. Also, as several macaques species have been sequenced, such as the Indian rhesus macaque and the crab-eating macaque, examination of the Chinese rhesus macaque (CR) genome offers interesting insights into the entire <em>Macaca</em> genus.

The DNA sample for data sequencing and analyses was obtained from a five-year old female CR from southwestern China. The genome was sequenced on the IlluminaGAIIx platform, from which 142-Gb of high-quality sequence, representing 47-fold genome coverage for CR. The total size of the assembled CR genome was about 2.84 Gb, providing 47-fold on average. Scaffolds were assigned to the chromosomes according to the synteny displayed with the Indian rhesus macaque and human genome sequences. About 97% of the CR scaffolds could be placed onto chromosomes.

The crab-eating macaque (<em>Macaca fascicularis</em>), also known as the Java macaque or long-tailed macaque, is a species of primate located throughout Southeast Asia. Due to the frequent usage of the genus <em>Macaca</em> in scientific research, the sequence the crab-eating macaque furthers our understanding on how it differs from other macaque species, like the Chinese rhesus macaque and the Indian rhesus macaque. This is especially relevant considering the recent trend of using crab-eating macaque (CE) and Chinese rhesus macaques rather than the Indian rhesus macaque as laboratory models.

The DNA sample for genome sequencing and analyses was from a female CE that was a captive-bred descendent of a CE from Vietnam. The genome was sequenced on the IlluminaGAIIx platform, and we obtained 162-Gb of high-quality sequence, representing 54-fold coverage. The sequencing data were processed with Illumina custom computational pipelines. The genome was <em>de novo</em> assembled using SOAPdenovo program based on the de Bruijn graph algorithm methods. The total size of the assembled genome was about 2.85 Gb, providing 54-fold coverage on average. The scaffolds were assigned to the chromosomes according to the synteny displayed with the Indian rhesus macaque and human genome sequences. About 92% of the CE scaffolds could be placed onto chromosomes.

The Emperor penguin (<em>Aptenodytes forsteri</em>) is a large penguin, standing over 1 meter tall, with distinctive black, yellow and white markings. Like most penguins, the emperor penguins are indigenous to Antarctica and exist between the 66th and 78th parallels.

Famous for its unique social and reproductive behavior, the emperor penguin also possesses a number of other notable evolutionary qualities: its stature, its feathers, its incubation process, and its swimming capabilities. The <em>Aptenodytes forsteri</em> genome offers new insights into this remarkable bird.
